About Our Trip

Disabilities - Awareness & Inclusion: Indianapolis, IN

2015 marks the 25th year since the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, aiming to guarantee people with differing physical, mental, and social abilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life. As of 2011, 12%, or about 1 in 8, of Americans identify as being disabled in some form, and 1 in 6 American children have been diagnosed with a developmental disability. Through this experience, participants will examine historical and current barriers facing communities with disabilities, gain a greater understanding of the range of ability identities, and learn how to serve as an ally and advocate for individuals with disabilities. We plan on working with several community partners in the Indianapolis area that will give us a first-hand experience on working with people with disabilities, which will give us insight as to how we can work towards a more inclusive society.
